How to sell to Heads of Marketing at E-commerce companies in Germany

Heads of Marketing in E-commerce companies in Germany are primarily measured on customer acquisition rates. They respond to outreach that demonstrates a clear understanding of their unique challenges, such as navigating the competitive landscape of online retail and optimizing digital marketing strategies to increase sales conversions. Tailoring your approach to address these specific pain points will increase your chances of a response.

What actually hurts

  • high cart abandonment rates
  • ineffective customer segmentation
  • low conversion from ad spend
  • inability to track campaign ROI

The playbook

  1. 01

    Identify recent product launches

Use platforms like LinkedIn or industry news sites to find E-commerce companies in Germany that have recently launched new products. This indicates they may be ramping up marketing efforts and seeking new solutions to drive traffic and sales related to these launches.

  2. 02

Target brands with high cart abandonment rates

Research E-commerce brands that have reported issues with cart abandonment. Focus on those that are actively seeking to improve their conversion rates, as they are more likely to be receptive to new marketing tools or strategies that can enhance customer retention.

  3. 03

    Leverage seasonal marketing trends

Identify E-commerce brands preparing for major sales events or holiday seasons in Germany. Reach out to them with insights on improving their marketing campaigns during these peak times, emphasizing your understanding of their urgency to maximize sales.

  4. 04

    Address challenges with customer segmentation

Find companies that struggle with effectively segmenting their customer base. Highlight your understanding of the importance of targeted marketing strategies and how they can lead to better engagement and higher sales conversion rates.

  5. 05

Follow up on engagement with recent ad campaigns

After initial outreach, follow up with insights or case studies related to their recent advertising campaigns. If they have launched new ads but haven’t seen expected results, they may be more open to discussing how your solutions can improve their marketing effectiveness.

Can e-commerce companies even receive your mail?

We measured the DNS of 578 e-commerce companies, sampled evenly across company sizes, to see how many authenticate their own email. It matters in both directions: a domain that does not authenticate is a domain whose team is used to mail going missing — and if your own domain is in the gap, yours is the mail going missing.

The gap is the finding: 19.6% of 1–10-person companies against 67.5% of the largest — 48 points apart. Small companies are where the unauthenticated domains are, and small companies are who most cold outreach is aimed at.

How this was measured

Company domains were sampled within employee-count bands, then queried over public DNS for SPF (TXT at the apex), DMARC (TXT at _dmarc.) and MX. One domain per company, deduplicated. Anyone can reproduce any single row of this with dig.

DKIM is deliberately absent. A DKIM key lives under a selector that cannot be enumerated from outside the domain, so a company with flawless DKIM under a name we did not guess would be counted as having none. That would measure our guess list, not the industry.

Domains with no MX record are excluded rather than counted as failures — parked and redirect-only domains would otherwise drag every figure down and make the result an artefact of the sample.

Sampled within bands, so this describes the population of companies, not of employees: a 10-person company counts once, as does a 10,000-person one. Each band is at least 60 domains; bands below that are not published. Figures are percentages of the sample, not of the whole industry, and we publish no company names — only counts.

Questions

Why do heads of marketing at e-commerce companies ignore outreach about analytics tools?
Heads of Marketing may ignore outreach about analytics tools if they feel overwhelmed by similar offers or if they believe their current tools are sufficient. They often prioritize solutions that directly address immediate challenges, such as improving conversion rates or enhancing customer engagement.
What common marketing challenges do e-commerce CMOs face?
E-commerce CMOs frequently encounter challenges like high cart abandonment rates, ineffective customer targeting, and difficulties in measuring the return on investment for marketing campaigns. These issues can lead to wasted resources and missed revenue opportunities, making them critical areas of focus.
How can I make my outreach stand out to e-commerce marketing leaders?
To stand out, tailor your message to highlight specific pain points relevant to their industry, such as recent changes in consumer behavior or competitive pressures. Providing actionable insights or unique solutions that can lead to immediate improvements in their marketing efforts will capture their attention.
What timing should I consider for reaching out to e-commerce marketing heads?
Timing is crucial; reaching out just before major shopping seasons or product launches can be effective. Additionally, consider the fiscal calendar and budget planning periods, as marketing leaders may be more open to new solutions when they are evaluating their strategies for the upcoming year.
