How to sell to Procurement leads at Construction companies

Procurement leads in construction measure success by reducing material costs while maintaining quality. They respond positively to outreach that provides insights on sourcing strategies or cost-saving opportunities. Understanding their challenges means knowing the impact of supply chain disruptions on project timelines and budgets, which is a daily concern for these professionals.

What actually hurts

  • supply chain disruptions
  • overpriced materials
  • supplier reliability issues
  • project budget overruns

The playbook

  1. 01

    Identify recent project delays

Search for construction companies that recently reported project delays in local news or industry publications. Delays often indicate procurement issues, making these leads more receptive to solutions that streamline sourcing and improve supplier relationships.

  2. 02

    Target companies with new contracts

Use platforms like BidClerk or ConstructConnect to find companies that have recently secured new contracts. These organizations are likely looking for suppliers and may be more open to discussing procurement efficiencies.

  3. 03

    Highlight material cost trends

Craft your outreach to include insights on current trends in material costs relevant to construction. For example, mention how certain materials have fluctuated in price and how your solution can mitigate these costs, addressing a common concern for procurement leads.

  4. 04

    Address common supplier issues

In your messaging, acknowledge the frequent challenges procurement leads face with supplier reliability and material quality. This can resonate with their daily struggles and open the door for a conversation about how your approach can alleviate these pain points.

  5. 05

    Follow up after project completions

Set reminders to follow up with leads after major project completions in their company. This timing is crucial as they often reassess supplier relationships and may be looking for new options to improve future projects.

Can construction companies even receive your mail?

We measured the DNS of 564 construction companies, sampled evenly across company sizes, to see how many authenticate their own email. It matters in both directions: a domain that does not authenticate is a domain whose team is used to mail going missing — and if your own domain is in the gap, yours is the mail going missing.

The gap is the finding: 19.2% of 1–10-person companies against 73% of the largest — 54 points apart. Small companies are where the unauthenticated domains are, and small companies are who most cold outreach is aimed at.

How this was measured

Company domains were sampled within employee-count bands, then queried over public DNS for SPF (TXT at the apex), DMARC (TXT at _dmarc.) and MX. One domain per company, deduplicated. Anyone can reproduce any single row of this with dig.

DKIM is deliberately absent. A DKIM key lives under a selector that cannot be enumerated from outside the domain, so a company with flawless DKIM under a name we did not guess would be counted as having none. That would measure our guess list, not the industry.

Domains with no MX record are excluded rather than counted as failures — parked and redirect-only domains would otherwise drag every figure down and make the result an artefact of the sample.

Sampled within bands, so this describes the population of companies, not of employees: a 10-person company counts once, as does a 10,000-person one. Each band is at least 60 domains; bands below that are not published. Figures are percentages of the sample, not of the whole industry, and we publish no company names — only counts.

Questions

Why do procurement leads in construction ignore cold outreach?
Procurement leads often receive a high volume of unsolicited emails, making it challenging for them to discern valuable opportunities. If your message does not immediately address their specific pain points or provide actionable insights, it may be overlooked.
What information do procurement leads value most?
Procurement leads prioritize information that helps them make informed decisions about suppliers and materials. They seek insights on cost trends, supplier performance, and innovative sourcing strategies that can enhance their procurement process.
How can I demonstrate value to procurement leads?
To demonstrate value, focus on providing concrete examples of how your insights or solutions can lead to cost savings or improved efficiency in procurement. Tailoring your message to their specific challenges will resonate more than generic pitches.
What common objections do procurement leads have?
Common objections include concerns about switching suppliers, potential disruptions during transitions, and the reliability of new vendors. Addressing these concerns upfront in your messaging can help build trust and increase the likelihood of engagement.
