How to sell to Heads of Sales at Developer tools companies in Canada
Heads of Sales at developer tools companies in Canada are primarily measured on revenue growth. They respond to outreach that showcases an understanding of their unique challenges, such as improving sales team efficiency or enhancing product adoption rates. Demonstrating knowledge about their CI/CD processes or observability tools can significantly increase your chances of engagement.

- poor product adoption rates
- insufficient customer feedback
- ineffective sales processes
The playbook
- 01
Identify teams using CI/CD tools
Use LinkedIn Sales Navigator to filter for companies in Canada with job postings mentioning CI/CD tools. Focus on positions that indicate a need for sales enablement or product adoption. This ensures you target organizations likely facing challenges in scaling their sales operations.
- 02
Highlight observability challenges
Craft your outreach to emphasize common issues around observability that sales teams face, such as reduced visibility into customer feedback loops. Reference specific pain points that arise when teams lack insights into product usage, making your message relevant and timely.
- 03
Leverage recent funding rounds
Research developer tools companies that have recently secured funding. These organizations often look to expand their sales teams and improve processes. Tailor your messaging to address how your solution can support their growth objectives in the wake of new investments.
- 04
Address API platform integration
When reaching out, mention the integration of API platforms as a critical factor for sales success. Discuss how your insights can help streamline the sales process and improve customer engagement, which is vital for Heads of Sales focused on driving revenue.
- 05
Follow up on engagement metrics
After your initial outreach, monitor engagement metrics such as email opens or responses. If you see a lack of engagement, follow up with a message that includes a relevant case study or testimonial from another developer tools company to reignite interest.
Can developer tools companies even receive your mail?
We measured the DNS of 587 developer tools companies, sampled evenly across company sizes, to see how many authenticate their own email. It matters in both directions: a domain that does not authenticate is a domain whose team is used to mail going missing — and if your own domain is in the gap, yours is the mail going missing.
Publishes a DMARC policy of quarantine or reject — the domain actually asks receivers to act on failures.
The gap is the finding: 27.4% of 1–10-person companies against 94.9% of the largest — 68 points apart. Small companies are where the unauthenticated domains are, and small companies are who most cold outreach is aimed at.
Where does your domain sit?
Same three lookups, run live against your domain. Nothing is stored and nothing is emailed to you.
How this was measured
Company domains were sampled within employee-count bands, then queried over public DNS for SPF (TXT at the apex), DMARC (TXT at _dmarc.) and MX. One domain per company, deduplicated. Anyone can reproduce any single row of this with dig.
DKIM is deliberately absent. A DKIM key lives under a selector that cannot be enumerated from outside the domain, so a company with flawless DKIM under a name we did not guess would be counted as having none. That would measure our guess list, not the industry.
Domains with no MX record are excluded rather than counted as failures — parked and redirect-only domains would otherwise drag every figure down and make the result an artefact of the sample.
Sampled within bands, so this describes the population of companies, not of employees: a 10-person company counts once, as does a 10,000-person one. Each band is at least 60 domains; bands below that are not published. Figures are percentages of the sample, not of the whole industry, and we publish no company names — only counts.

Questions
- Why do heads of sales in developer tools ignore outreach about sales training?
- Heads of Sales often prioritize immediate revenue-generating activities over training initiatives. If your outreach doesn't clearly connect training benefits to measurable sales outcomes, it may be perceived as less urgent. Focus on how training can lead to faster onboarding and improved sales performance to capture their attention.
- What triggers heads of sales to engage with vendors?
- Heads of Sales are more likely to engage when they experience specific pain points, such as declining sales performance or challenges with team scalability. Highlighting an understanding of these triggers in your outreach can create a sense of urgency and relevance, prompting them to respond.
- How can I effectively position my solution to heads of sales?
- Position your solution by emphasizing its direct impact on revenue growth and team efficiency. Use industry-specific examples that resonate with their daily challenges, such as improving sales forecasting accuracy or enhancing customer engagement through better tools.
- What common objections do heads of sales have?
- Common objections include concerns about budget constraints and the perceived complexity of implementing new tools. Address these proactively in your outreach by providing clear ROI examples and simplified implementation processes that minimize disruption to their current operations.
